Programme Note

Composer note:
Pollock is a feature film chronicling the life of the iconic and revolutionary American painter Jackson Pollock, directed by and starring Ed Harris. It was released in 2000, and garnered two Academy Award nominations for its lead actors (Mr. Harris and Marcia Gay-Harden).

When I first met with Ed to discuss the music for his film, he asked me to give a voice to Pollock's work that expressed the revolutionary aspect of his painting style, but in a way that avoided the sense that his art was a simply "random act" (as Pollock himself vehemently denied). The end result were themes that blended Americana, minimalism, and syncopation, all woven into layers of interlocking rhythms and small musical motifs.

The score has a sense of joy and energy, which served to provide a dramatic contrast in the film with the darker side of Pollock's story: a brilliant artist, haunted with bi-polar disorder and a self-destructive alcoholism.
