Composer's note:
When one is living in a time of deep worldwide conflict, it becomes necessary to ask questions about the state of our existence and, hopefully, to arrive at answers. We now have the capacity to destroy ourselves. We cannot help but ask "how did we get to this point? Where do we go from here?”
I found myself asking these questions as I began to compose the symphony commissioned by the Paulist Fathers. As I wrote the work, these questions, with all their inherently contrasting shades of meaning, began to find their way into the music. Consequently, I began searching for answers. An answer for me became apparent when I decided to use the traditional Latin chant of the Agnus Dei as the principle idea for the conclusion of the entire symphony. The last three words of the Agnus Dei are "Dona Nobis Pacem”, grant us peace. My symphony is a plea and a prayer for peace.
