Programme Note

“Wenn die Rose sich selbst schmückt, schmückt sie auch den Garten”. This sentence is the entire basis of the work, which is related both to the meaning of the sentence and to its sound.

I experience the meaning of the sentence as a defense for the refinement of an individual´s personal gifts (far from the unfriendliness, so typical of the times, toward individuality and the approval of impersonal success in society) – a refinement which, at its highest point, becomes a deep sense of responsibility and active influence on the condition of society.

As far as the word sound is concerned, the words of the sentence are used both in understandable sequences and with vowels and consonants separated from it. The vocal part often is purely instrumental here, moving gradually into the notes of the alto flute, then into the flageolets of the double-bass, taking over and altering these into human sound, which is then absorbed again in total instrumental tapestry.
