Ole Schmidt 75 years

Through almost a half century Ole Schmidt has been a key figure in the Danish as well as the international musical life. During the early years he made his way as a jazz pianist. After studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music (debut 1955), Schmidt was already a sought-after composer in Denmark. Among his early works one find a Piano Concerto and music for the ballet Bag Tæppet (Behind the Curtain).
The following years Schmidt studied conducting with Sergui Celibidache, Albert Wolff, and Rafael Kubelik parallel to his increasing number of conducting engagements around the world.
The oeuvre consists of orchestral works, concertos for various instruments, ensemble and solo works. To mark Schmidt’s 75th birthday Edition Wilhelm Hansen releases his seven String Quartets of which the 7th was written in 2002.
