On May 9 & 10, horn quartet german hornsound and Konzerthausorchester Berlin conducted by Andris Poga perform Symphony No. 10 „Æris“ by Erkki-Sven Tüür.

Only a minor difference in the spelling distinguishes the Latin words Æris and Aeris which mean brass and air. Furthermore, the close connection in spelling is reflected in the words’ semantic meanings; brass instruments’ association with wind is clear in their reliance on air to produce sound.

In his Symphony No. 10 Æris, for horn quartet and orchestra, Tüür focusses on the brass sound which reflects in the title. The work consists of four movements that are flowing into one another and that all show a different development between the orchestra and the soloists.

Tüür describes the horn quartet as a messenger that brings prophecies of imminent irreversible changes. Will their message be understood? What will be the reaction and how will it impact communication? Where did they come from anyway? What did they want to tell us? He wants every member of the audience to deal with these questions according to their social compass and imagination that the audience takes this journey with an open mind.

Later this month on May 23 a new recording of Symphony No. 10 Æris performed by Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and Olari Elts will be released by ECM. It’s the ninth New Series album at ECM to feature the music of Erkki-Sven Tüür. The record will be available for pre-sale at the concerts in Berlin.
