Yes, there's this little passage where you could be anyone in the departure land. - Jonathan Dove

Jonathan Dove’s acclaimed opera Flight takes off at Vancouver Opera from February 8-16, 2025. This three-act opera, featuring a libretto by April De Angelis, was originally commissioned by Glyndebourne and premiered there in 1998, with subsequent performances in a wide array of international opera houses and conservatories. Renowned director Morris Panych and esteemed conductor Leslie Dala lead a stellar cast of international talent, including Cameron Shahbazi, Caitlin Wood, Asitha Tennekoon, and Andriana Chuchman.

Flight masterfully balances laugh-out-loud humor with poignant moments, as it tells the story of a refugee living in an airport— inspired by the true-life case of an Iranian refugee who spent 18 years at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris. The opera unfolds around a diverse cast of travelers, each stranded in the terminal, their personal dramas interwoven with the refugee’s experience.

In an insightful conversation, composer Jonathan Dove and Ashley Daniel Foot explore how Dove transformed an airport terminal into a mythic space filled with drama, humor, and humanity.
