On May 27, Ballet Zürich and the Orchestra La Scintilla will give the world premiere of a new ballet by the award-winning British choreographer Douglas Lee. Lady with a Fan forms the first half of a double bill entitled CORPUS, partnered with another new work, disTanz, choreographed by Filipe Portugal.

Both ballets explore the relationship between new and ancient music, inspired by Baroque composers. Lee’s Lady with the Fan is based on the painting of the same name by Diego Veláquez. It takes music from Vivaldi’s violin concerti as its starting point and blends it together with excerpts of Gotham and Romeo by Michael Gordon. This is the second time Lee has choreographed music by Gordon; in 2012 he impressed audiences and critics alike with his work Aria for the Stuttgart Ballet.

Both parts of CORPUS will be performed on period instruments and conducted by baroque music specialist Christopher Moulds. It runs from 27 May to 2 July, 2017 at Hauptbühne Opera House, Zürich
