Lang’s Little Match Girl Passion on disc
11th May 2009
Composed in 2007, The Little Match Girl Passion sets Hans Christian Andersen’s tale in the format of Bach’s St Matthew Passion, interspersing the original narrative with the composer’s own versions of texts from the crowd and character sections of Bach’s passion. “What drew me to The Little Match Girl,” writes Lang, “is that the strength of the story lies not in its plot but in the fact that all its parts – the horror and the beauty – are constantly suffused with their opposites…. There is a kind of naïve equilibrium between suffering and hope.” The piece won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 2008.
