Michael Kurtz's biography of Sofia Gubaidulina is the first in any language. He conducted extensive interviews with Gubaidulina, her colleagues, and her family, and was given access to her papers. He gives a chronological account that places the personal details of her life and the evolution of her work within the broader cultural and political context of the post-Stalin Soviet Union.
