Primous Fountain III
Primous Fountain III was born in Chicago in 1949. After finishing high school, the Chicago Symphony performed his orchestral piece Manifestation, later choreographed by Arthur Mitchell for the Dance Theatre of Harlem. That score led to a commission from the record producer, composer, and arranger Quincy Jones for Symphony No. 2. Composer/conductor Gunther Schuller led performances of Fountain's music by the Boston Symphony, the American Composers Orchestra, and the New England Conservatory. Michael Tilson Thomas brought Ritual Dances of the Amaks to the Buffalo Philharmonic and the San Francisco Symphony.
Among his recognition are Two Guggenheim Fellowships, a Goddard Lieberson Fellowship from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and a BMI Award.
